The challenge
Kite Coffee wanted a loyalty program its customers would actually use. The brief was simple: as little friction as possible, for the customer and for the staff.
Most café loyalty breaks in one of two places. Customers won't download another app or carry another paper card. And at rush hour, baristas skip the stamp because there's a queue. Kite didn't want a program that depended on anyone remembering to do something.
The solution
TapCard worked with Mint POS, Kite's point-of-sale provider, to connect the loyalty program directly to billing.
When an order is rung up, Mint POS generates a TapCard QR tied to that exact order and branch. The customer scans it with their phone camera, at the counter or at the table, and joining and stamp collection happen on their own phone. The code is signed, single-use and expires in 20 minutes, so one order can only ever earn once.
The KITE Rewards card lives in the customer's Apple Wallet or Google Wallet: collect 9 stamps and the next coffee is free. No app to download, nothing to carry, and one card works at every Kite branch.
How it works
- 1Order and bill as usual
The cashier rings up the order on Mint POS, which generates a TapCard QR for that order. No new screens or buttons.
- 2Customer scans the order QR
From their own phone, at the counter or at the table.
- 3Join and collect in one scan
First-time customers fill a short form and the KITE Rewards card installs into their wallet with the first stamp already on it. Returning customers get the stamp in one tap. The same order can never be stamped twice.
- 4Free coffee on the same order
With 9 stamps collected, the customer picks Use reward instead of Collect stamp. A green Reward approved screen with a live clock goes to the cashier, who adds the free coffee at Rs 0 to the open Mint POS order. Staff don't verify cards or count stamps.
What changed for staff: nothing new to learn. Stamps happen without them, and the only loyalty step at the till is adding the free coffee when a customer shows Reward approved.
The outcome
- Members in 90 days
- 280+Members in 90 days
- Stamps collected
- 425+Stamps collected
- New customers vs the 90 days before
- 30xNew customers vs the 90 days before
- Customers a day at peak
- 30+Customers a day at peak
- 280+ customers joined in the last 90 days - 30x the 90 days before - and 250+ of them in the month since loyalty moved onto Mint POS.
- 425+ stamps collected with zero manual stamping, and the first free coffees already redeemed.
- 0 seconds of extra staff time to issue a stamp.
- Daily loyalty activity grew from around 10 customers a day in the first days of the rollout to 30+ a day within two weeks.
- Returning customers came back every day from the first week, making up about a third of daily active customers in the second half of the month.
- [One line on what Kite noticed, e.g. faster queues at peak hours, customers asking about their reward progress, staff no longer explaining how stamps work.]
In their words
“Our worry was rush hour - any loyalty step at the till is the first thing that gets skipped when there's a queue. With TapCard on Mint POS, the QR comes with every order and customers stamp their own card. What surprised us was how quickly regulars started coming back for their next stamp.”
Want this at your café?
If you're on Mint POS, the integration is already built. You can run the same setup Kite runs, with a QR on every order and stamps on autopilot.
Not on Mint POS? TapCard also runs as a standalone loyalty card, with a QR at your counter.
